According to the NVQ in Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis, it is crucial to understand the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in emergency situations. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use an AED effectively:

Step Instructions
1 Ensure the safety of the victim and those around them. Check for any hazards and make sure the area is safe to use the AED.
2 Turn on the AED and follow the voice prompts. Place the pads on the victim's bare chest as shown in the diagram on the AED.
3 Ensure that no one is touching the victim and press the "analyze" button on the AED. Allow the device to analyze the victim's heart rhythm.
4 If the AED advises a shock, make sure everyone is clear of the victim and press the "shock" button. Follow the voice prompts for further instructions.
5 Continue to follow the AED's prompts until emergency medical services arrive. Be prepared to perform CPR if necessary.
